Feeling Powerless? Start with Your Mindset

By Lena Scullard

Mindset is the real choice that precedes every outcome.

We make thousands of choices every day. Most fly under the radar. But the ones that challenge us — under pressure, in conflict, or in moments that matter — reveal a deeper truth: our greatest power isn’t in what we do, but in what we believe before we do it.

Mindset Is the Story You Tell Yourself

You’ve probably heard the quote, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right.” It’s often credited to Henry Ford, and for good reason — it’s a perfect reminder that mindset sets the stage. As someone with a passion for theater, I’ve experienced how mindset drives action firsthand. When actors prepare for a role, they don’t just memorize lines and block movements. They dive into the beliefs of the character.

- What does this character want?
- What are they afraid of?
- What story are they telling themselves?

The character’s mindset informs every word, every gesture, and every reaction. Without it, their actions fall flat. The same is true off-stage.

You don’t always get to choose the script life hands you — but you do get to choose the mindset you bring to it. And that choice will shape everything that follows.

The Pause Is the Power

In everyday life, we often skip straight to action — react, fix, defend. But in emotionally charged moments, the smartest move is actually a pause. That’s the space where you can check your mindset.

- What am I assuming here?
- What belief is shaping my emotion?
- Is that belief helping me or holding me back?

The pause isn’t weakness — it’s wisdom. It’s where you regain control of the narrative and decide whether the mindset you’re in is the one you want to lead with.

Actions Are a Ripple of Belief

From that mindset comes movement. Not the other way around. Kindness in conflict. Accountability when it’s uncomfortable. Silence when you’re tempted to lash out. Courage when you’re tempted to quit. These aren’t reactions. They’re intentional choices. But they only happen when mindset comes first.

“I Didn’t Have a Choice” — Or Did You?

How often do we say it? “I didn’t have a choice.” And in some moments — it feels true.

- The diagnosis came.
- The marriage ended.
- The sentence was handed down.
- The job was cut.
- The loss was unbearable.

You didn’t choose the storm. You didn’t invite the pain. But even in the hardest, most heartbreaking circumstances… you still have one sacred thing: the power to choose how you show up in it.

It doesn’t mean toxic positivity. It doesn’t mean pretending it’s okay when it’s not. It means choosing a perspective that serves your strength instead of your fear. It means saying: “I can’t change what happened — but I can decide who I want to be in response to it.” That’s not just empowerment. That’s survival. That’s growth. That’s integrity.

When we say we had no choice, we give away the one thing we still have. Don’t give that power away. Reclaim it. Use it.

Mindset + Action = Integrity

You don’t get to control outcomes. You don’t get to rewrite someone else’s part of the scene. But you do get to choose your mindset and the actions that follow. When those two align — when belief and behavior are working in sync — that’s integrity. And integrity is the kind of presence that builds trust, shifts culture, and creates influence — whether you’re leading a team or living your daily life.

Own Your Power to Choose

Take a moment right now. Think of a time when life backed you into a corner — when it felt like you had no say. Maybe it was a diagnosis. A betrayal. A moment you never saw coming.

Now ask yourself: What mindset did I bring into that moment — and what other mindset could I have chosen? How might that mindset have led me to a different course of action? Would that have gotten a different or better outcome? You can’t change the past, but you can absolutely learn from it and begin to shape what happens next. Because you are not powerless. You are not passive. You have the power to pause. The power to decide. The power to respond with intention.

So start there. Choose your mindset — and let your actions follow. That’s where your real strength lives.
